blogger spotlight: anne smiles
Autumn has arrived here in the UK- in North Yorkshire anyway- and with the arrival of a new month, I have a new blogger to feature on my monthly Blogger Spotlight. Every month I feature one blogger on my blog to really celebrate the diversity of bloggers out there. I ask questions about them, their blog and any plans they may have in the future. It gives a really good insight into the blogging world and how each blogger is different in their approach to the blogging world.
This month I am featuring the lovely Anne from Anne Smiles.

Tell me a little about yourself and your blog...
I'm Anne, a 20-something dane blogging about health and wellbeing. I've been into fitness in some form and moving my body ever since I started playing football at 6 years old and have bachelor's degree in Sport and Health Science. But I blog about much more than exercise - I have a history with depression and anxiety, and developed chronic pain in the past couple of years. Thus I found subjects like mental health and body acceptance important to talk about too!
How long have you been blogging and what kind of content can we find on your blog?
For a long time I was only sort of aware that blogging was a thing and that there's a whole community around it which I floated in and out of until I started a proper blog - annesmiles - 3 (?) years ago. On my blog I create recipes, share workouts, talk about body image and body positivity, health from a scientific, anti-fat stigma standpoint combined with personal posts about gratitude, mental wellbeing and other lifestyle stuff.
What made you choose to start a blog and why did you choose the subject/s you blog about?
Fitness has always been my thing, and when I learned there's people online who share my passion, I wanted to connect with them! As I've grown (as a person, and due to my chronic pain), the subject has changed with me - sharing workouts I can no longer do myself just felt like torture. So instead I'm now focusing more on mental wellbeing, gratitude and general lifestyle posts as they come from a more genuine and authentic place.
Where do you find inspiration from for your blog?
Most of my blog posts actually start out as random thoughts that pop into my head either on the bike ride home from university or while doing the dishes.
But I also follow some wonderful bloggers and instagrammers that share amazing, authentic content that makes me want to make an extra effort with my own blog.
Do you have any big plans for your blog?
The short answer: No. Maybe that's weird? I don't dream of becoming a full-time blogger - being self-employed is very stressful, and with a chronic pain condition, it's too risky. And it's not exactly "inspirational" or glamorous to be chronicly ill, so it'll be hard to get big enough to even do that.
I used to put a lot of pressure on myself to stick to a strict schedule, but with a sorta broken body that's no longer realistic or helpful. Letting go of the big expectations helped me find back to what I loved about blogging as a hobby, and it's just a way I enjoy spending my freetime!
Tell me about your proudest blog achievement.
Winning an award at HBC x ThatProtein Health Blog awards in 2016 - my blog was still fairly new, I was still trying to get a hang of the whole blogging thing, and how I fit in. At that time I was mainly freaked out over the fact that actual humans have read my blog, but as I got over that shock, it's something I'm really proud of. It's also a reminder to me that sometimes done is better than perfect (because striving for perfect just means I get 0 posts written).
What has been your biggest blog disaster?
Accidentally deleting the whole thing... yup. I thought I had my blog backed up as it was transfering to a new web host. I did not. As I learned too late. I had an exported file from a little while back with most posts, so I didn't loose everything, but my theme, design, image links was gone - it was just a disaster, and took so many hours to fix.
Moral of the story: Back up your blog!! (that includes all files from your webhost, and your sql database if you're self-hosted).
Time is always a big discussion point between bloggers, how do you manage your time?
I use Trello boards to organize and keep track of everything - both my blog and personal life (I'd be such a mess without it). There I have lists of everything I need to get done and could get done, so in busy periods I only focus on the essentials. I also love finding ways of either bundling or automating tasks to make my work more efficient. The amount of time I spent on my blog varies from week to week, and it's mainly controlled by how much energy I have. I try to listen to my body, remember that my blog is a hobby - I'm doing this for me!
Lastly, where do you see your blog in 5 years time?
This is a tough question. I do have dreams about growing a community around my blog, and becoming a quality resource on the topic of body positivity, body image and wellbeing but at the same time I have a body that could either be more disabled or fitter than ever by that time - and that will shape all areas of my life, including my little blog. So what I really hope is that it's a place that has a positive influence on other people's and my own life.
A massive thank you to Anne for answering these questions! I really love Annes focus on health and well-being with lots of fabulous posts about fitness, body positivity and how this is incorporated into her everyday life. I also love how Anne has blogging tips and tricks on her blog and I will certainly be making my way through these blogs to see if I can put some of Annes tips into action!
Also, a big congratulations on winning an award at the HBC Awards in 2016- an amazing achievement!
