How I Stay Energised Throughout The Day

Picture
If you are like me sometimes you need to be able to keep your energy levels well topped up during the day to be able to feel like you are alert,  energised and can continue to work at your best potential.
A lot of people turn to caffeine or sugar hits when they feel like they need an energy boost, which is fine, but I am here to give you some tips on how to keep your energy levels fairly stable without having to resort to that 11am coffee break or 3pm sugar spike.

Always eat a good breakfast

I don’t know about you but if I do not eat a good breakfast within an hour of getting up then my energy levels are down for the whole day. Avoid packet cereals and go for filling and nutritious breakfasts such as porridge oats with berries or eggs on toast with spinach or avocado. Try and eat within 45 minutes to an hour after you’ve woken up.

Include proteins in your snacks

An apple with a few almonds, Greek or plain yoghurt with fresh fruit or seeds, nut butter on rice cakes, hummus with vegetable sticks, anything like this! Having protein helps keep you mentally alert, concentrate and think clearly. Protein also keeps you fuller for longer so your snacks will be a lot more satisfying.

Drink plenty of water

I always drink between 2 and 4 litres of water per day. I also always drink enough so that I never feel thirsty. Being dehydrated can make you feel tired and your ability to think clearly and concentrate will be affected.

Don't skip meals!

You all know this but it needs repeating because it still happens! Your body needs well balanced meals and snacks at regular intervals throughout the day to keep your blood sugar levels at a fairly even keel. If you skip a meal your blood sugar levels can take a huge nose dive which will leave you feeling tired, low on energy and generally rubbish. I always have my 3 main meals- breakfast, lunch and dinner plus two snacks in a day. Sometimes three depending on my activity level for the day.

Carry snacks with you

Having a healthy snack with you is the perfect way to get a quick pick-me-up if you begin to feel hungry or your energy levels are starting to drop. There are so many healthy snack options out there now that you really have no excuses to have a high sugar chocolate bar in your bag! Nut and fruit bars, chickpea ‘crisps’, fruit or just a protein shakes are always packed in my bag.

Move yourself

If you can, just simply go for a walk. Physical activity oxygenates blood cells helping you to refill your body’s fuel tank and feel instantly energised and ready to carry on with your day. If you can’t get out of the office then stand up walk around for a little bit. A 5 minute ‘moving around session’ really does make all the difference.
