mallorca travel guide part three: the eastThe third and final installation of my Mallorca travel guide is here! Although we didn't do the whole of the east, exploring the eastern side of the island was pretty cool. Fabulous bays and beaches with crystal clear and warm waters, castles and lots of caves! We definitely stepped back in time with the places we visited here. Here are my recommendations for the Eastern side of Mallorca- Cuevas del Drach The Drach caves are the biggest and most well-known caves in Mallorca. Situated in Porto Cristo on the East coast they are some pretty impressive caves! You can enter these caves on the hour only as part of a large group and you are ushered through them. There is no guided tour but there are people there to ask questions to if you wish. The cave system ends at a large lake where the room is set up with seating so you can watch a special musical performance by a small orchestra. As much as these caves are impressive, I felt we were ushered round quite quickly and it all felt a bit rushed. It’s also a very busy place absolutely full of tourists so don’t expect a quiet walk round! EAT: Quince (Porto Cristo). Quince is a little restaurant in Porto Cristo, overlooking the little port. It serves a variety of dishes but we decided on some tapas to get us through the rest of the day. Guacamole (which we were allowed to make ourselves), jamón serrano and Aioli and bread. The portions were pretty generous so you don’t need loads of options to fill you up. It has a lovely view over the port and is a very modern and chilled out place. Tips when visiting-
Es Caló Beach There is only one word to describe this beach; WOW! Es Caló is only accessible by foot so park up, get your trainers on and get ready to walk! The walk isn’t all that long, about 30/35 minutes but if you do it at 1pm like we did it’s going to be hot! This beach is totally worth all the hype though. An absolutely stunning area that isn’t too busy. The beach is only small and of course at 1pm in the afternoon is quite full but, if you carry on walking along the path a little more, you will find other little secluded bays with maybe only one or two people on. Or, if you are lucky like we were we had a whole little bay to ourselves! The water here is crystal clear and it’s just you and the sound of the ocean. There are also multiple places to do a bit of cliff jumping if that’s your thing! Tips when visiting-
Cuevas del Hams More caves! These caves are situated a stones throw away from Cuevas del Drach so both can easily be done in one day. They are a similar entity to the Drach caves but much smaller and less of an attraction, which is nice. The walk down to the Hams caves is much nicer too and it’s just generally a nicer experience. As the caves are smaller you are in smaller groups and are walked through by staff. You watch a short film about the caves before entering and then for some bizarre reason you also watch a film about the big bang. I think it was to symbolise that the caves have been there since the dawn of time but I can’t be sure! The Hams caves are split into two caves, one where you watch all the videos and the other you walk through and end up around a lake again to watch a show; this time projected onto the cave walls. It’s a little random but just go with it. Tips when visiting-
Capdepera Capdepera is a small town in the top eastern corner of the island. As with all Spanish towns expect narrow streets, little squares and a few cafés. Here we visited the Capdepera Castle which sits at the top of a pretty steep hill! It’s a castle in ruins but still in pretty good condition. There are lovely views across the town and beyond from here and it’s nice to explore and be able to walk along the walls here. It would be a great place to take kids to let their imagination run wild! It’s was lovely to experience Capdepera as I think we were the only English people actually there! I can’t imagine it’s a busy place as it’s not one of the big touristy places so visiting any time of day would probably be ok. We didn’t explore a huge part of the East or the East coast due to having other places and areas we really wanted to visit more but I definitely highly recommend all of the above places we did visit, especially Es Caló beach! I hope you have enjoyed my Mallorca travel guides! As you can see we fit in so much stuff in 16 days but I truly loved exploring the island and discovering old and new places. Amie xx |
